This is completely random and off topic, but miles what is your take on Hunter S. Thompson?
I respect the man. I regard him very much in the William S Burroughs tradition of writing in that when he was good he was very good, but when babbling you can just ignore it. Thompson was an important writer and when lucid he was extremely talented with it. He isn't one of my favourite writers, but I do respect his output. He was a good writer and people should read him. They should ignore Johnny Depp films.
Hunter is great because of the drugs he took like most great artists. Prescribing authors that people should read is a bit weird though. On a similar note people do undervalue greatness some times, this week I bought a John Updike -Rabbit, Run - Rabbit Redux - Rabbit is Rich omnibus for a quid and the original 1922 text version of James Joyces Ulysses for 50p. Also i am surprised you do not already think your own shit tastes good, i know mine does..yum charred but strangely moreish
