Spent today reading the latest John Grisham, which is very good, and played Skyrim for about three hours. Really liking it, though I could do with getting more instinctive at the controls. My fighting seems a bit haphazard, so maybe magic is the way to go for me.

I played Fight Night for a little while but got bored of it quickly. The story mode was pretty slick but legacy mode and online play were awful.

I'm back on FIFA now, although I only really play the ultimate team online. I've got a great MLS team at the minute which is fun to play with. I'll probably stick with FIFA until the new UFC Undisputed comes out. I generally don't have the time or patience to play anything other than sports games now though.

Angry Re: The new game thread

What do people make of Skyrim? I couldn't get into it. I loved Oblivion and the Fallout games but this just seems a case of same old same old. There's nothing new to the mechanics or gameplay and thus no sense of adventure for me. In many ways it feels a step back from New Vegas in terms of combat, party member control and having no real life survival mode. Many of the quests are ridiculous. I'm an evil Argonian death monster yet some little kid wonders up to me and asks me to tell some little girl to stop bullying him. Another quest saw me telling this guy the girl he fancied wasn't interested in him. Why the fuck am I being bothered with quests like this? What semblance or reality does this have? That's the biggest problem for me with Bethesda games, the quests and plot lines are utterly absurd and seem to be aimed at children.

I found the Witcher games to be much better. Skyrim to me is maybe a 70% scoring game, having spent several hours with it I'm amazed everyone rates it so highly. I stopped playing after a Thieves Guild quest required me to go into a guest house and beat up a woman in a fist fight. I had no objection to hitting her, it was just absurd that she wanted to get into a bar fight with me and actually nearly took all my health in the fight, I barely won. Now this was stupid, my character has marched on bandit camps and killed a dozen men at once, I've slain two dragons, multiple sabre cats and giant spiders, and I almost met my match fighting some middle aged housewife who worked in a bar

    Shit game.

I'm dying to pick up Skyrim, but I'm waiting for all the problem associated with the PS3 version to be fixed before I even consider it.

Morrowind, the precursor to Oblivion, is hands down my all-time favorite video game. It was ridiculously complex and open-ended. Just a fantastic game.

Oblivion fucking sucked. I hated it and I still hate it. I keep trying to get into it, but it's so dumbed-down and the enemy level-scaling is the dumbest fucking think I have ever seen. A mudcrab should be the same difficulty at level 1 as at level 100. Fucking stupid bullshit.

Skyrim is supposed to be better, so I'm hoping against hope that Bethesda actually gets off their lazy asses to fix all the bugs for once.

Come to think of it, I'm going to try and find a free pc version of Morrowind. All the mods for it are supposed to be amazing.

Let me know if any of you have a link.

I've not really played Oblivion or Morrowind, so I can't really comment on that side of it. I'm enjoying Skyrim so far though.

    Maybe that's why.

There has literally been no development or progress in all that time. It's the same game with different textures and story. A few decent moments but mostly hours and hours of repetitively walking around talking to people, who then send you off on the most mind numbing quests ever devised for a video game.

Actually another example that springs to mind. This guy had been declared killed in battle but his parents were convinced he had been kidnapped by a rival family and wanted me to find evidence. So they asked me to break in to this family's house and find proof.

So I did. I lockpicked my way into their home, only to find them all awake and inside. Oh shit, I thought.

Actually it wasn't a problem. They were quite friendly and chatted with me whilst I ransacked their house looking for the diary to prove their crimes. I was actually in the wife's bedroom catting with her when I spied it and started reading it on the table right in front of her. She carried on chatting away, I stood up, took the diary, bid her farewell and left.

Then I went back to the other family who now had a location of where their son was being held captive. They asked me to assist in reclaiming him. I looked at the map. The location was fucking miles away so I couldnt be assed. There was nothing in game to suggest why I should care anyway, I mean aren't I some dragon borne warrior on a quest to save the world? Why the fuck do I care about petty family squabbles or relationship breakdowns?

I just find this game so annoying and beyond shit. The potential is there, but the quest lines are so absurd they destroy any and all credibilty the game has. It's like you are put into a medieval warrior world given a life and death quest to save the realm, but your actual role is that of an agony aunt, social worker and relate counseller.

Annoyingly it seems to be only myself and my brother who recognise this. Everyone else is happy to play along, delivering love letters, helping some old crone find her pasties and admonishing a small girl for being mean to another child.

It's utter shit and wouldnt be acceptable in any other game. Imagine a Battlefield 3 level where some market stall worker has had his tables overturned in the war and his rice ruined so you have to go off and sow a paddy field and bring back some bags of rice back so he can start selling again.

No other games company other than Bethesda can get away with such a turd and still have universal praise lavished upon them.

    It makes me genuiney angry.

Skyrim is above average for me. It's pretty much Fallout 3 but in a fantasy world with dragons and mages, so same old stuff. I'm playing the PC version and it's buggy as hell.

I'm playing Uncharted 2 now. It's good wholesome fun. I will definitely buy 3 next.

What on earth is Skyrim? The very name puts me off. Sounds like a Bilbo thing to me.

You'd love it you, can probably go on a quest together, only I wouldn't trust Bilbo's character not to bum you whilst you slept in a cave.

In fact as I continue through Uncharted 2, I have to say that it is the best game I have ever played. Wonderful visuals, lots of mechanics variation, top story. GTA4 was the game that first wowed me, but I like this more.

All I have at the moment is an old PS2 and I never play it.

I did just order Football Manager 2012 from Amazon.

Huge mistake really. I played the 2010 version WAY too much. Eventually threw it away, avoided the 2011 version, and planned to avoid this one.

The plan is no more than 1 hour a day at most, and some amount of days per week (I haven't decided yet) where I don't play it all. Discipline.

Football Manager 2012 is more of the same high quality addictive stuff. The only benefit is that you don't have to inject it to get your fix.
