That is a lot to learn in 6 months, but there are aspects of it you should always use. On the inside, for example, you always want to pull in tight and get your left shoulder into his chest because it takes his right hand and any uppercuts out of it.
Take your time, which I know is something you don't want to hear when you are all ready to go. It'll take quite a bit of sparring, getting used to punches flying at, and bouncing off of, you before you can really relax in the ring and start thinking and doing things on purpose, as opposed to just reacting.

Early on, the best defense is staying out of range. Learn to catch the jab in your right glove, and stay at an angle to block the right with your left shoulder. You have to understand distance- stay just out of range, but close enough to be able to get in and punch. That's a good place to start.

You just catch it in the palm of your right hand, as you jab back. If you pivot to your left as you catch and jab your punch will generally get there before his. You can work a few other things off of this.
Once you catch that jab, if you stay in front of him, he'll know you are in range and throw a right hand. That opens up opportunities for you to counter. Or you can catch that jab a time or two, to get him stepping hard with it, then parry and bring that jab up like we talked about earlier. (To parry, just slap it aside with your right glove. Let it get real close to you, push it aside as you jab or hook back.)
You can message me here, as I'm on most everyday, and I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have, if I know the answer.

For me the Philly defense is your normal guard... If your legs are on distance greater than the sholders and you keep your weight on the bag leg (the basic boxing stance) your front sholder will rise automatically. Drop the hand down and lean a bit furder and you are in the position that James is rolling in. From this postion you can do everything. You can step with your jab you can throw right hands, you will be able to step, this means that you will be able to control the distance and so on... The second step is to play with the distance. Bate him in by staing forward and when he throws his shots roll back and make his shots fall short.
