I liked Bert Sugar, he was one of the greatest characters in boxing and I loved his stories even if they may have been slightly exaggerated. RIP great man.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
I can't say I was a big fan, but there's no doubt that Bert was good for boxing and helped make it interesting.
R.I.P. Bert Sugar.
Was never a fan of Bert. I percieved him as a blow hard, and more often than not full of sh!t.
But I can't deny he was one of boxing's classic, colorful characters. RIP to Bert and condolences to his family.

Sad news. R.I.P.
I always remember a quote of his when referring to Larry Holmes' opponents and it went something like ' He should be fighting household names but hes fighting guys who aren't a household name in their own household'. That's not exactly it but it was along them lines.
He Who Is Brave Is Free
Wisdom, compassion and courage are the three universally recognised moral qualities of men.

This sucks much. He was bashing "alphabet boys" and some crooked promoters before it was fashionable. This is losing a tie into another generation of the sport. Before box rec, Saddos and before I even had internet possible-available it was his 'Boxing Illustrated' that kept me informed on current and passed. Took riding a bus downtown to find a news stand that even carried it but was a monthly trip never missed. When looking for back issues there was a single number in the front so I called it, got put on hold and was then shocked as shit to have Sugar himself pick up the phone. Thought I was being put on but nope. Holmes and Mercer had just been signed and he asked me what I needed, took a number and I said I was buying the fights. His exact response was along the lines of "Holmes is getting killed in there"and said to enjoy the magazines and to keep reading and that was the extent of it. Yeh no big deal but at the time it was pretty damn cool to some geeked up 22 yr old boxing newb. He was alright by me and will be missed greatly. Be at peace Mr. Sugar.
