I think it really comes to leaving yourself options. Read the surroundings and individual but never fully show your hand. Once you accelerate a situation to peak based on anger, ego or ignorance there really is only one way back often ending in charges and scars. Rather I'd say keep them guessing with disarming quiet confidence and verbal Judo...but in the back of your head knowing full well you may have to resort to that primal mindset as last resort and go knuckle duster on someone.
