We all saw what Foreman did to Frazier right??
It wasn't pretty.
Foreman was the much MUCH more dangerous opponent as his elongated career would support.
Ali was two fights back from a three year enforced lay off, he was at a low ebb when Frazier broke his jaw in the 15th round.
For me Foreman -Ali; the 'Rumble in the Jungle' is about the most perfect fight anyone could have fought in those conditions. The sweat flying off Ali's head when Foreman whacked him for 7 solid rounds of beating was landing 4 rows back. It was a stunning display from a fighter most folk thought was going to be physically murdered by the awesomely powerful Foreman.
I remember watching it as a kid with the whole family crowded around the TV and the neighbours and their kids, Mums and dads and grandparents, everybody was scared that Ali was going to die at the hands of the hardest hitter boxing had ever known.
It was like time stopped.
That has never happened to me since on any sporting occasion.
The whole world tuned in to see the Rumble in the Jungle.
He proved us all wrong and came out the champ, for a second time, by a decisive knock out.
It wasn't just boxing, it was history, it was like a hollywood story, except it was real.
So many people wanted Ali to get smashed down before that fight. it was viewed that he would finally get his come uppance for being a loud mouth, a conscientous objector etc.
After the fight he won many hearts, and many more people, who still hated him had to admire his courage, chin, durability, talent and cunning.
There have been other perfect fights out there, for sure, but this one above all others, with the build up and the tension and the two totally different combatants , was unquestionably an execution of the perfect fight.
