Sure, the fault here lies within his leadership and personal decisions, but I give him the benefit of the doubt. He's young and probably can't wrap his head around anything that isn't boxing. I'm pretty sure no one has told him to his face what we boxing enthusiasts say among ourselves. I too hope he comes around and realizes what it takes to get true respect as a fighter...I really hope he does this because he would earn it.

I hope Josesito makes enough money to retire, 'cause that's what Canelo will surely do to him. What a lousy, one-sided matchup.

Obviously this is a farce, but I guess there aren't a lot of more tempting fights out there for Canelo right now. He's already gone the route of facing worn out or mediocre guys with name value his last few fights. The only other guy in his division who follows suit for me is Kirkland, and that one was already scrapped. Lara is a damn good fighter with very little draw and no belt, so it makes sense for both guys that one isn't going to happen yet. Martisyan or whatever looked fairly average to me the couple times I've seen him, and must not offer the same payday that even Lopez will at present.

My guess is that Lopez either has bad management, or is overconfident and wasn't able to make a big fight at welter right away. Either way this is going to be really ugly for him, Ortiz himself was at 140 not long ago and he dwarfed Lopez, Canelo is a solid 154 pounds and he can fight. Be surprised if goes more than a few rounds.

My guess is that Lopez can carry the weight, and if you told him you were trying to convince everybody he shouldn't get a chance at Canelo, he would probably punch you in the face. If he didn't start swinging, he'd be in your face wanting to know why you are trying to knock him out of his big chance and big payday.
Lopez is a winner, and anything can happen in a fight. Lopez wants the fight, it's his big chance, just like the Ortiz fight was his big chance.

Are you his brother? If you told James Toney he couldn't beat Wlad Klitschko tomorrow he'd probably eat you alive with a spoon, that has nothing to do with it. Obviously Lopez is tough and has a big heart, but he looked tiny at welter next to Ortiz. He can't carry this weight, and stylistically doesn't have a single thing going for him against Canelo. It's not about whether he thinks he can win, it's a terrible fight which sets both guys back regardless of how competitive Lopez is able to make it. Terrible matchup.

Conelo could have asked for cotto or better yet bundrage! Same weight class big fight! Cotto big name to prove his true talent. Bundrage not to big a name but could start something big for both fighters

I wouldn't be stupid enough to discuss anything with James Toney.
Lopez was going to get his ass kicked during the Ortiz fight. You do remember that Ortiz had a broken jaw when the fight stopped. There are plenty of things I would like to see changed in boxing, but giving somebody a chance at the brass ring is not one of them. Lopez deserves the chance as much as anyone, furthermore I think Canelo likes him, or his fighting spirit, at least.

There were AT LEAST FIVE better choices of opponents. Given the depth of the division, it's impossible to rationalize Lopez as a choice. Lopez was brought into the fight with Ortiz as an opponent. He was down on all the cards when he made Ortiz quit. Their fight was at welterweight. Lopez is a career junior welterweight. This fight is at junior middleweight and Lopez is facing a younger guy, who is stronger physically and mentally.

Don't get me wrong: there's nothing wrong with Lopez taking the fight. It's great to see a guy from Riverside get a big pay day. Clearly, however, it's a poor choice of opponent for Canelo.

When Kirkland fought Angulo, that WAS a WBC eliminator. The winner was supposed to fight Canelo... que pasa?

Kirkland has fought again and won (unconvincingly) in ANOTHER WBC eliminator, but did EITHER of those men get chosen?)

Then their was word Kirkland was going to fight Bundrage instead of Canelo... neither happened. How are they able to pass fighters off to different orgs like that? That's a whole different thread...

Many people thought Canelo lost to Molina. Why not make that the September main event? That would have been more compelling--or telling.

Let's take it from a different perspective... Martirosyan (who I am NOT a fan of) has been at or near the #1 position of every sanctioning body for at least the past two years... how hasn't he received a shot yet--from anyone?

If I remember correctly, Austin Trout CALLED CANELO OUT on TV after his last win, saying he's ready, available and will put up his belt. Is Canelo NOT trying to unify the division?

What rules of boxing are we paying attention to nowadays? So when people choose to call him a 'cash cow' or 'payday' fighter, just think about what he is actually putting on the line to earn that payday...

Until he fights someone truly top 3, he gets zero respect from me. Personally, I don't think anyone but Kirkland has earned the shot... Josesito did not. In fact, Haye/Chisora has more grounds for taking place than this fight.

*Have to say I'm happy about Martinez/Chavez & Khan/Garcia is going to be a better fight than anyone expects!
