He was not in freefall as long as Kittenger but obviously jumped from higher, so I am assuming when we saw his parachute deploying it was an automatic safety feature to ensure he slowed down in time or something?

God I was really nervous for him once that door opened. I don't know how he didn't shit his pants when he stepped out onto that step.
