OK, so more people than ever qualify for government assistance. A lot of the people using food stamps will be US army families because they're paid so little they qualify for food stamps. And all the working poor who also qualify. This is a combination of the economic downturn caused by deregulation and both parties being owned by the banks and big business and the rising economic inequality caused by the same thing. Not good at all for America. It's not all freeloaders Lyle, it's people being fucked by big business.

Obama is going to keep all current spending, increase taxes for the top 1% only and spend three plus trillion dollars in new stimulus over the next four years. That will cut food stamp use dramatically to pre-2008 levels.

Also, food stamp use is the single most effective stimulus there is. That's because it's all spent immediately. Hopefully part of Obama's new stimulus programmes is increasing food stamp a;lowances for people who qualify for them. At the moment it's only a hundred and thirty a month apparently.

I came into the Army at an E-3 pay grade b/c of my education. My wife didn't work and we had one child before my first promotion. The Army Community Service rep told my wife as an E-3 we didn't qualify for food stamps but did qualify for WIC after our second child was born. I don't know if an E-1 or E-2 qualified or not but mind you a Soldier that entered the Army at E-1 would be and E-3 in a year at a minimum barring UCMJ actions. I read all the articles about rampant use of food stamps by military personnel but every young Soldier I've had with children didn't qualify and neither did I. So I'm not sure who is using food stamps but the window to do so is pretty small.
