There seems to be a bit of rewriting of history with regards to Calzaghe's fight against Lacy. A mate of mine placed a bet the day of the fight that had Lacy as slight underdog. Must admit that I was the one who said that was worth a punt (I'm starting to believe that I have the ability to influence fights by predicting a winner. If you hear me waxing lyrical about a fighter on these boards, bet on the other guy).
Even the "experts decide" section run on the BBC website had Calzaghe to win, with Bunce, Woodhall and McGuigan all tipping Joe to win on points.
Fast forward a few years and in the eyes of his fans Joe overcame the very gods of Olympus.
Ishida dropping Kirkland 3 times in the first round for the KO xD
Couldn't of happened to a more deserving prick.
You say tomato,
‘n I say …… it correctly.
Lloyd Honeyghan / Donald Curry. Curry was never the same after this fight.
This was possibly the best performance from a British fighter on foreign soil.
Terry Norris over Ray Leonard has to be up there.
Pinckney/Jr Jones. Darryl was like 20-20-2 or something as was supposed to be a tune up. He almost took Juniors head off. Jones then went on to beat Mab twice.
Randall/Chavez. Frankie was like a 15 to 1 underdog and Sr was undefeated at least on paper in 90 contests. Randall was actually older then him.
Sanders/Wlad. Corrie was a 20 to 1 underdog and was dragged off the golf course.
Ali was an 8 to 1 underdog when he fought Liston.
I'm on my phone so I can't be bothered to check if these have been mentioned but ones that quickly spring to mind:
BHop whopping Tito
Raheem beating Morales
Bonecrusher Smith vs Tim Witherspoon 2
Philip Holiday vs Jeff Fenech
Vernon Forrest vs Shane Mosley 1
George Foreman vs Joe Frazier 1
Gaby Canizales vs Richie Sandoval
Corrie Sanders vs Wladimir Klitschko
Can't forget Roy Jones spanking James Toney.
I guess it was seen differently across the pond in the UK. I remember the majority sentiment being that Lacy was an absolute killer in his prime, and Calzaghe was an overhyped, protected UK slapper with brittle hands who was finally going to be exposed.
In fact I even remember a couple of big British boxing fans I chatted with on another forum who didn't have much hope for Calzaghe.
Salido beating Juanma in there 1st fight was a shock. Salido was about 10/1 if I remember correctly.
Balboa v Lang 1. I thought Rocky was unstoppable
