Breland was next Ray Leonard with a Tommy Hearns body. He was 6' and fought at Welterweight. Won Gold in the LA Olympics (84) and beat Harold Volbrect [sp] in 87, to win the vacant WBA title, that Honeyghan vacated, because he refused to fight a white South African.

Breland was stunned by Marlon Starling in first defence, blowing a lead and getting stopped in the 11th.

He had a rematch with Starling (the most boring fight of the year) getting a draw.

He cameback to win the vacant WBA title that Starling's controversial conquerer Tomas Molinares lost...

He flattened (a with hindsight shot) Honeyghan in 1990 in probably his finest win, then lost to Superman Davis in a cracking fight (and big upset) later that year.

Breland never regained his world class form post Davis, and retired finally in 97 and became a trainer.

Domnick Guinn comes to mind as one of his (former) students.
