Who was Eddie Hopson ?

Ran across this lil guy watching an old episode of Tuesday Night Fights Knockouts, and he was a fast, slick lil fella.

Had a bit of a short career, and only held a world title once, but what a talent he was.

Anyone know much about him? Greynotsoold?

I dunno if 10 years and 32 fights is a short career mate lol.

I saw him fight Tracy Patterson in the late 90s I think it was.

However if I remember rightly he got destroyed, so I know nothing of his slickness or talent.

eddie was a Duva/Benton fighter. Southpaw, very very fast and he was supposed to beat everybody because of this incredible speed. Worked pretty good for awhile, until he fought tracy Harris Patterson who, being a veteran of more than 50 fights and an honest to goodness pro, was not impressed by a guy that was basically a pretty good amateur.
Eddie had this habit of moving real fast, circling to his right, then skipping back the other way, hands down and feet together. Which he generally got away with because he was real fast, but against an honest to goodness pro fighter...As he was skipping back to his left, real fast with his hands down, THP timed a right and that was that. Stopped him in either the 2nd or 5th round on three knockdowns.
I knew he got stopped again right after that and then retired. I didn't know that he came back a few years later.

Watched "fast eddie" box as a junior J.O. kid and he won the nationals! He competed at the Olympic Training Center (Colo Spr. Colo) and lost as an open class fighter to stop him from competing on the national team! I think Georgie Benton had him but I don't remember if he lost interest in the sport or if he got caught by the streets! Entertaining boxer not much pop!!! Ray.

Hopson was freakishly fast of hand and reflex but he was also a hyper bundle of nervous energy who never really transformed from great amatuer to educated professional. Beat Banks, Carl Daniels, Sharmba Mitchell among others in Ama. Turned pro in Highschool with Duva as trainer who made him finish school as he talked about dropping out for pros. He was in a rush and way to eager for his own good. A case of wanting to be a flashy star and small mistakes becoming a part of skill set instead of refining things. He got way ahead of himself. Sparring with Meldrick Taylor and Whitaker doesn't mean you can be them. He was getting caught in between flurries as he came up and Duva saw it. He belted around rugged Hector Monjardin but was stunned badly in second round before it was over. They saw Patterson as his breakout fight but honestly it was man vs boy and Patterson was reading him before he even entered the ring. Tracy actually came up two weight divisions for that fight and it was just a brutal eye opening beat down and Hopson never recovered.

I am pleasantly surprised at the wealth of knowledge on this guy. He was lightning fast and befuddled most guys he fought.

It was surprising seeing Patterson KO him as I never thought of Patterson as a KO puncher, but it makes sense how he got him when greynotsoold and spicoli explained it.

You guys reckon Gatti woulda done the same to him?
