Gorgeous Georde is the one who told Ali to wear white in the ring. He said "You will look so clean, people will come to the fights just to watch you get dropped and get those white trunks dirty. it will be so annoying that it will sell."
Basically the jest of it and telling him a little about showmanship too/
Gosh, I am old enough to have seen Gorgeous George on a black and white TV. He had dyed hair and really not a very good physique. He struuted around the ring like a corpulent peacock; he must have been ancient when, and if, in fact, he spoke and advised Cassius Clay.Originally Posted by Starr

Whatever the real story was, George and Ali were marketing aces.
Clay/Ali met 'Gorgeous' George in Las Vegas whilst he (Ali/Clay) was giving pre fight hype for his upcoming match with Duke Sabedong in June 1961.
But when George hyped hia match he put on a display that included knocking over microphones and explaining how he would pull off his opponents arm and beat him with it!
"I am the Greatest" George exclaimed!
Clay/Ali realised his 'act' was puny in comparison and decided to go the whole hog and developed the on-screen persona that intially made him so unpopular.
cheers guys surely ali must been a bit like that before he met george i mean he done it so good
Yeah, but he upped the hype post Gorgeous GeorgeOriginally Posted by TheSilverBoy
Dead right, Britkid - Ali heard george promising that if he lost he would "crawl across the ring and kiss his (opponents) feet". That was a line Ali used later, word for word, before the Thrilla in Manilla.Originally Posted by Britkid
