Alas, improving your time in the 100 yard dash- or even the 220- does not teach you how to fight with your fists, or even how to use your feet in the ring.
The process of becoming a good professional fighter involves improving your skills, learning to be economical and efficient in the use of those skills, always getting the most out of what you have. I think that berto, like many recent fighters, was never deliberately matched competitively. Ortiz, Guererro, and Soto-Karass were all guys he was supposed to blow out but they fought back and Berto never bothered to learn how to fight
