I haven't seen Alvarez much, just 20 rounds or so. I don't think that he is a big puncher. He reminds me of Yori Campos- he knocked out a lot of guys, but not at the top levels and I never saw him really hurt anybody with a punch.
From what I have seen of Alvarez, he is strong, pretty quick of hand, and he punches well to the body. He doesn't set his punches up well, and he doesn't place them well. You can throw everything as hard as you can, but, if you don't do those two things, you won't accomplish much. When you are fighting 'opponents' and guys there to lose, it doesn't much matter. At the top level, you have to know where they are going and set up getting them there.
