Got that fight on DVD. Oscar had his hands up yes but he was trying to parry and counter not ear muffing. Never bought the hype that he did well either. Grabbing and throwing love taps to the body meh. His jab only pushed Floyd to the ropes when Floyd was clowning and when Floyd opened up his straight right was like a homing missile.
I will have to go back and watch again. Your description doesnt sound too far off tho because every time ive watched that fight Ive thought "man if ODLH only had that umph he had a few years ago".
ODLH had a similar style to Alvarez but ODLH did it right and was just more gifted imo.
Canelo's good against meatheads who earmuff and play let's be heavy bags but it was never gonna work on Floyd. Canelo's punches were all coming from the same place and angle while Floyd's were coming from underneath, around the sides and over the top. It's not just genetics that's made him quick but his whole stance and style.
I wasnt impressed by canelo at all
His tactics were awful. Trying to outbox floyd at a distance? He saw what a washed up Oscar and washed up Cotto had success with against a prime floyd. He had to put combos together. Even guerro who was out of his league put pressure on.
I was especially disappointed in that last round when floyd was using lateral movement and canelo just suddenly stopped chasing him and walked back. That was a sign of mentally giving up bordering on Durans no mas, he just didnt turn his back
Canelo wasnt prepared to take the risks required and will continue to milk the Mexican fans for afew years. Floyd looked sharp but is running out of challengers
I hate to sit here and say this now but the first thing I thought about Alvarez was that he is just to slow. Im not gonna sit here and say I called the Floyd win because I didnt at all.
But I did think Alvarez was slow without good footwork. At the same time I thought he would be able to hit Floyd hard and have enough strength and power to overcome any shortcomings he might have which obviously wasnt the case. You obviously have to get and stay close to Floyd and have tons of technique and power to have a chance (I could be wrong here lol).
But yeah what you said sounds about right. The reason I wouldnt say your 100% right is becasue Floyd outclassed him so bad on the inside and outside. If Floyd would have at least made a mistake somewhere we could make an easier judgment on Alvarez. But what Floyd did was beautiful so its just hard to come to any conclusion on Alvarez.
