They only sold 1500 tickets. The PPV projections were abysmal. The promoter didn't even have the 300K in the first place, Jeff Fenech put that up for some reason. There was no way he was going to see the money so he did the sensible thing.
Jeff got bent over the park bench and probably never got kissed first. Shane looks like a common criminal. An elaborate con-job.Anthony Mundine and his team plan to follow Shane Mosley to the US in hopes of rescheduling the flight. “The fight is off for now, but it could be rescheduled. that’s what we’re working on,” Mundine said during a hastily called news conference at the Tony Mundine Gym in Sydney, Australia.
Meanwhile, Shane Mosley and his team are currently over the Pacific Ocean on Quantas flight 107. The plane is expected to arrive at LAX at around 6:45AM Wednesday morning.
Despite not fighting, Mosley will pocket $300,000, which was paid in advance per the contract and was nonrefundable. He was due the balance of $700,000 before the fight, which promoter Wlad Warton was unable to produce.
Boxing Hall of Famer and legendary Australian world champion Jeff Fenech stated that he personally put up the money to get Mosley to fight in Australia. “I gave him $460,000,” Fenech told AAP. “I certainly wouldn’t have done that if I thought the fight wasn’t going to go ahead because my guarantee was that when the fight went ahead, (with) the pay-per-view money and the pub and club money that I’d be paid back, but now it doesn’t look like it….Vlad Warton told me he needed $US300,000 as a start to getting here, then another $US100,000 for all his expenses, and a little more. So I accommodated for all that, and now they’ve gone home so I’m really left with nothing. It’s going to be a little bit tough for a while.”
Very tough for Fenech, but it doesn't really sound like Shane was in bad faith or anything here to meIf he was due the other 700 grand in writing before the fight, regardless of how absurd his making a million for the fight may have been, he has no obligation to fight without getting it. Seems like Fenech may have made the biggest error in judgement, this Warton promoter must have talked him into it somehow to cut his losses. Surely they(Mosley, Fenech and co) would have known that sales were crap though, must be more to the story.
Yeah but when you put it all together its starting to stink a little on Shanes part and I hate to say that because I really like him and gave up on Mundine years ago after starting out as a big fan.
I mean why the 300 grand down payment to begin with? Did he have some pressing bill. And the 100 grand expenses? Seriously that's simply outrageous. Just because he never got the pay on time does not mean he was not going to get paid. As it turns out Mundines ticket sales are always bad but its the ppv numbers that make it up and again Shane was fronted half the money already. The contract demands from the get go look excessive makes makes the ending dubious at best. I agree that there must be much more to this story.
Maybe Shane was simply brought up to date on Mundines lack of drawing power and demanded the guarantee in case exactly this happened. That doesn't mean he wasn't hopeful that it would still sell or the promoters would gamble on it and pay him, he obviously needs to the money after all. It's not as if he'd rather waste his time training and making the trip to Australia for 300k than go through with the fight for a full million, which was his guarantee before the fight. It's a promoters job to project revenues and pay the fighters a fraction of that, if they fuck up to this point I don't see how the blame lies with anyone else. I'd bet Fenech just got fleeced royally by this Wharton character one way or another.
