Why is Lamont Peterson still IBF champ?

I'd argue that this situation shows why catchweights are necessary. A couple of pathetic alphabet outfits, that choose and influence who becomes their "world" champion, nearly prevented a fight between two genuine world-class fighters because of technicalities in their pathetic rules.

Every hardcore/nerd boxing fan knew Peterson (although a drug cheat) and Matthysse were top of the tree 140 pounders. We didn't need a belt people.

If the best have to fight the best outside the apparent gospel designated weight limit, so be it.

Funny thing is everybody knows how ridiculous the entire situation is and nobody does anything about it. This was written on the wall when the Wbc was formed after the split from the Wba and then the Ibf, Wbo and about 10 others today. Add to that the division expansion and the watering down becomes a torrential rain fall. Then catchweights start to creep in drenching the plant even further. 17 divisions turns into who knows how many. Not only do they add catch's they allow them in title fights. Look just throw out the weight classes all together.

Lamont might win(MIGHT) win his next fight, but he'll lose the one after that. Can't really see him beating Garcia or Ruslan. Or Crawford

GBP won the purse bid for the Jean fight with a bid of just over 156 k so no the sanctioning fee's are most likely pretty dismal. I'm sure in the backrooms they would rather have Lucas. I'm sure they know they have a paper champion.

I think Peterson is the best fight at 140lbs and the 13th best fighter at 141lbs. It just goes to show you what 1lbs can do
