Ward is an excellent fighter inside and out. He's just vanilla though. Doesn't have that X factor.

im not sure what the x factor is supposed to be. he is easily beating everybody so if he doesnt have the x factor, he probably doesnt need it.

Someone compared him to Mayweather but he will never look untouchable. He will always have to scrap and maul his way past opponents and then genuine tough world class fighters he faces that he doesn't cut will have him looking vulnerable in the last few rounds when he tires.

But the evidence does not support that and I can see the Mayweather comparison. He rarely misses and rarely gets caught clean. He also completely discourages his opponents with his sharp countering. Rodriguez's output dropped like a boat anchor. Not sure I understand the "world class" opponents comment. That is who he is fighting and he's making them look pretty pedestrian.

Btw I have not seen a jack hammer jab like he has since Lennox Lewis. Kept looking to see where his feet were when he threw it.

What I find interesting about Ward is that with all his technical prowess, he's also just as comfortable in the gutter and can mud it out with the best of them. That must come to a shock to his opponents who believe that taking him there is their only shot at winning.

The first two rounds were pathetic then Ward looked superb. It was like watching Floyd whitewash an opponent, not a great fight but impressive skill backed up by pure dominance.

I thought the fight was relatively entertaining. Ward's style isn't for everyone. He hits and holds a lot, but he does bring action to the ring, if that makes sense. If Ward had more pop in his punches, his entertainment value would increase a lot.

Perhaps people expected more risk-taking out of Ward because Rodriguez was deemed to be a much inferior opponent. However, any way you cut it, Ward dominated.

With regard to the comparisons with Mayweather's record, as I said earlier in the thread, Ward has arguably beat better competition than Mayweather has over the last few years. I don't think Ortiz, Cotto, Guerrero, Canelo are as tough a schedule as Kessler, Froch, Bika, Dawson, and Rodiguez. Kessler and Froch were lower end p4p guys and Bika was tough at that stage of his career. Now, you may say Mayweather has done it with more style, but his competition hasn't been as high in my opinion.

But he has HBO backing so it's irrelevant. He just got $1.9 million for facing a "no-name." He is clearly doing something right. To put that into perspective, Golovkin-Stevens combined purse was $675,000.

As boxing fans, aren't we constantly debating legacies of different fighters? It's part of the fun! What is pound for pound if not fantasy? We don't know how Floyd would do against Klitschko's style if weight was irrelevant, but that doesn't mean we can't debate it. It also doesn't sound like you are disagreeing with me.

In any event, I'm not debating Mayweather should be p4p No. 1 right now, but if Ward keeps fighting tough opponents, he'll start itching closer to that spot. For example, if he cleaned out 175, he might take over the p4p number 1 spot.

The main problem I have with Ward is his lack of stance on the PED issue. He's throwing the same arguments Pacquiao threw out when Mayweather wanted PED testing for their fight. I'm surprised people are jumping on him as much as they did Pacquiao.
