You could try planting the plants somewhere else.
If they live or die, you gave them a chance.
The dilemma is one which I understand completely, despite never owning plants.
I suggest getting a spade and doing some midnight gardening, then no one can complain.
Make it a fun experience, do not hand off responsibility to anyone else, leave it to nature return them to the ground and what happens, well it happens.
