I think the commissions should stipulate that if you don't make weight, you automatically forfeit 50% of your purse to your opponent.
And/or enter the fight one point down (good suggestion on a sweetscience article today).
Getting fined is justified but entering the fight with one point down is pretty silly.. this is pro boxing, not some play fighting..

One point down is gay dude.
Not gay. In that case so is a fine.

The point deduction simply levels out the advantage of coming in heavier but doesn't make it play fighting IMHO. So a pro-boxer needs to come in heavier than a supposedly inferior opponent? Now that's weak.
A fine won't do anything if you have the cash/name as someone said before or somewhere else or whatever but a point less would make "pros" think about it.

I think Canelo will win anyway. Better boxer.

I think being docked 50% of your purse would be a big enough motivator to cutting this shit out. Especially when you're name is Canelo or Mayweather, and 50% of your purse is MILLIONS of dollars lost for you.

getting docked a significant amount of money is the only way to solve it. the weight is in the contract. and your opponent should be able to forfeit the fight while receiving compensation from the fighter that didnt make weight.

for example, if canelo comes over 1 pound, angulo should be able to do one of two things. first, take 50% of his purse. canelo is making 1.25 million for the fight so angulo takes around 600,000 from canelo (although maybe he should also get part of his profits from the event too that canelo is receiving). or second scenario, angulo just takes 25% of what the higher paid fighter (which is canelo in this fight) would have earned and skip the match. so angulo could walk with around 300,000. this would at least somewhat solve the problem of a lower paid fighter still being forced to fight at a disadvantage because of the money. they could still earn money (not as much though) and just take another fight later on.

    i like it.

Only problem here is if the lower paid fighter refused to fight he'd probably never get another big pay fight.
