Holyfield by KO.
Liston too slow and plodding for Holyfield.
As soon as Liston faced what Holyfield would have considered a decent opponent he lost!
Liston would have cleaned up on Joe Louis though I reckon!!

the fight would never happen as Holyfield would fail the pre fight drugs test and be disqualified!

Drugs dont give you heart and skills, homey.. drugs are overblown in boxing. Its like who cares if a fighter takes drugs. Just allow all fighters to take drugs then it would be an even playing field..
If that bum joe blow Lopez took drugs, would he be any better? He would still be a bum..
Drugs or no drugs, holy beats the diver Liston aka uncle tom..
Yep that's the truth ain't it. The steroid age gives a modern fighter 2 benefits, it can increase his strength to weight ratio to abnornmal levels which may be beneficial to a boxer but not really a sport specific attribute, power is different. The other thing is it can enable him to move up in weight much more successfully but at the new weight he must face other boxers of that weight anyway including the natural fighters of that weight who normally hit harder anyway. Hence they do not produce better boxers, or better fighters in and of themselves!!

all good points, and Holyfield was a great fighter with serious cojones ...... But Liston was the naturally bigger fighter and another genuinely tough guy.
It would be a war, but I see Prime Liston (the one two or three years BEFORE he actually won the world title) as being to strong for Evander.
Holyfield starts brightly, quicker and a better boxer, but he gets drawn into a war and the weight of the Liston punch breaks him down for a late stoppage for Sonny

liston would have his moments because of his reach and stiff jab and the fact that holyfield doesnt have the greatest defense. holyfield would probably make him quit late in the fight though.

Holyfield was not a great heavyweight champion, he was not very consistent and had poor performances at times. Holyfield was probably at his best when he was undefeated and weighing 205lb but he did bulk up later but was slower and not has active. It would be a close fight because Sonny had a ram rod jab which I can see knocking the head back of Evander time and time again. Holyfield relied more on conditioning and determination when he beat Dokes, Thomas and Alex Stewart.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
Liston is the bigger man naturally that's true, but as they were, Holyfield was a bigger man with the drugs.
Holyfield was not a really hard puncher but he did KO Tyson and other hardchinned boxers and got the drop on others too and he was never really put down with anything less than multiple hard punches from great and sometimes giant boxers.
Liston might have been more powerful but we can only gague his power against the crap that he fought. Exclusively CW's and bums and losers represented his list of win opponents in entirety, let alone his KO's. I'm sure Holyfield could have KO'd nearly every single one of those opponents as well!
And what about the phantom punch? Assuming that was a legitimate KO (which I kinda doubt) then Sonny Liston was a pretty weak specimen really then and I would be more worried about Liston in one of those brawls than Holyfield!!
