Friend of mine says he discovered gold mine

My uncle spent a summer fishing, camping and panning for gold in the Sierras. Some place not far from Bishop. I still have a couple nuggets that he brought back. Where I live now, there are a lot of mining claims in the mountains, from the old days. There are two operating commercial gold mines. One is east of here, near the town of Whitehall, while the other is south, in the Highland Mountains.
