Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
I know soul music is supposed to be gravelly voiced black dudes singing about women and various things. I have no aversion to a decent song from Gaye, or Franklin, but for me all music spoken from within is soul music. Lou Reed, Neil Young, Scott Walker they are every bit as soulful as anyone else. They speak to the soul meaning the fundamentals of human existence. Soul means to be alive, the essence of the human condition. I think the whole black people argument about soul is in itself somewhat racist against many white people who are soulful. We are all soulful people. Soul is life.
I heard a track from a guy called Paulo Nutini and apparently he is all about soul despite his whiteness, but really all I got were a bunch of inane lyrics from a man who thought gravelling it up and using a few core buzzwords was soul. I didn't think it was soul music and thought it was very contrived. Media seems to like it and is getting good reviews, but this man doesn't speak to me, so I am not feeling his soul.
I think some of the 'soul' artists have little soul and other artists who are rock and pop, sometimes display a lot more. Finito might have a point, though I don't like many of the tracks he is playing.
