Cotto haters need to at least try to be objective. What is Martinez doing defending his title using a knee brace? What next an arm brace because somebody has a shot elbow? Why should he be able to get leverage advantage through artificial means? This is ridiculous and if that injury is that bad then quit fighting.
Martinez should pull out of the fight if the conditions aren't suiting him.
He's the champion. He's anti bullying... Just walk away and choose to defend against someone else.
Agreed... Martinez is the undisputed champion of the world and should have never agreed to these bullshit terms in the 1st place. I like Cotto but the whole A side B side crap is nonsense when it comes to respect to the champion and Cotto should have understood that. You want the belts come and get them on a level playing field.

Absolutely right. Imagine if Floyd Mayweather said his shoulders hurt from using his vaunted shoulder rolls and was allowed to use American football shoulder pads for his championship fights. The outrage would be endless. Now it's considered "unfair" by Sergio fans that he can't use a knee brace. If you're not in tip top condition to fight anymore, then retire.

Yea, using Floyd as an example is a bit rich given his hand injections
Could a brace conceivably help anyone without a bad knee to begin with? I really don't know, but I do seem to remember Yuri Foreman wearing one, in his fight against Cotto, in New York![]()

This whole thing could be a simple case of lost in translation. What constitutes a brace. That pic of the thing Chavez is wearing is not a brace. I wore one of those when I played Volleyball. Another thing people ought to remember instead of shitting on Cotto is the fact that the NYSAC made the call not Cotto.
It may be convenient to just blame Cotto like he runs the commission but for lack of a better term its also just stupid. Hopefully they explain what the problem is.
I have read that the NYSAC made this decision about not allowing fighting with knee braces in 2013.
It's something that Martinez and his handlers should have known about in advance of signing the fight.
So it's not about Sergio specifically...and it's his bad for not looking into whether his special needs were legal under NYSAC rules.

Right, and that's what I assume Martinez wanted to wear here? It's the kind of thing you see on all sorts of athletes. I just can't see how the commission could justify banning Martinez from wearing the same thing they allowed Yuri Foreman to wear, how is that even remotely justifiable? I don't think it's unlikely that Cottos camp may have leaned on them into ruling this way at all, and I don't dislike the guy, or even see that so much as laying blame myself. Some fighters absolutely are bigger than the state commissions in these instances, it's not like a universal body in a legitimate sport, this is boxing![]()

Cotto is the house fighter here. The NYSAC are doing everything they can to extend his career.
If Sergio wins comfortably on points how confident will he feel in the ring afterwards waiting for the decision?

I don't buy that in this case and I called Cotto on his stupid weight demand and name appearing first on the banner.Again, if that knee is still that fk'd up then Martinez should have retired. He does not have a special right to gain leverage through artificial means anymore then someone has to do steroids. What next an elbow brace for arm extension of full fake limb? A great play for a built in excuse though.
