    Fight of the day

    1968: Lionel Rose vs Takao Sakurai, Tokyo.






    1921: Jack Dempsey KO 4 Georges Carpentier, Jersey City. Retains world heavyweight title.
    One of the first million dollar gates.

    1925: Harry Greb W 15 Mickey Walker, NYC. Retains world middleweight title. After the fight the two met up at Big Bill Duffy’s Silver Slipper, a Broadway speakeasy. Walker was hammered and accused Harry of thumbing him and before Harry could get his coat off to throw down Walker suckered him and the got into a street fight with onlookers saying the Toy Bulldog got the best of him.

    1940: Max Baer KO 8 Tony Galento, Jersey City, NJ.

    1958: Joe Jennette, 78, died. I dont normally include births and deaths but Joe died in the month and year I was born and I always thought of him over the years as one of the most under appreciated hevs in the sport.
