Yeah the history is in weaponry. When the southern Chinese were getting trounced by the well armed North and had their weapons removed they turned to farm implements and to the martial arts so that they could get even when picked on.
the center line theory was spoken about by a number of masters of different styles that were coming together to arm the public and try for a coo.
They figured that if you were going to die in a battle you would do so fast from being hit anywhere from the width of your ears down to your groin as all the main arteries, temples and organs that have the most blood are reached down the core.It was the protection of this core and the exposing of the enemy core that made them adopt a style of two small swords around a center line system,so that they could train open handed and then adapt two swords or long knives that would simply be an extension of their already trained hands.
So the idea is to study how you can stand your ground and distance but shift your center line so they miss your center line ( and you get theirs in the same move).
In that manner two short knives beat one long sword of the old style because they simultaneously block and attack so they can simultaneously turn and cover their own center line and at the same time cut into the opponents center line.Shifting with side steps to maintain distance but divert force.
