Technically Napoles would be an answer, but not really; so the first that comes to mind is Brian Mitchell. Brian won the crown at home, but never defended it there, there after.
Why did he fight abroad? Was it sanctions against South Africa?
What about Ken Buchanan?
Yes, but thanks to this young Panamanian fella, Ken only made two successful defences.
Looking at Ken's record he would have carried on fighting abroad if he won.
Buchanan bemoaned the lack of money and opportunities available to him in the UK. He was caught in that era when it looked like the one night exhibition tournaments (since reinvented as 'Prizefighter'), looked to of ruined the sport to anyone weighing less than 160lbs.
