This is a bad move for Quillin in terms of popularity in boxing. He'll get grief for this because it looks like a duck job. It looks like his team didn't have confidence that he would beat Korobov because the risk/reward ratio when he's being paid $1.4 million is pretty good.

Who vacates the title with a career high pay day in sight against a guy he'd be favored over? If he had a fight with Jacobs lined up, put it on hold for three months, beat Korobov, and then face Jacobs? If WBO wouldn't support unification with Jacobs, then you move on and face Jacobs after making $1.4mm and everyone understands.

Sure, Korobov is promoted by Top Rank, but Jay Z was promoting the fight, AND, Haymon's done business with Top Rank recently - Loma vs. Russell.

This only makes sense if Haymon wouldn't do business with Jay Z. I can't think of any other reason.

Jacobs and Quillin are managed by Haymon. It's a coup for a few extra bucks. If the rationale is this, Quillin/Jacobs may generate more money than Quillin vs. Koborov and Jacobs vs. another stiff until he fights a big name.

Now they're saying that Haymon has issues with Jay Z. But no one could say what it is?? I don't believe it. I believe this is simply Haymon taking control of a knock out artist with a little bit of a name in the MW Division- let's face it, the only name at MW worth talking about is GGG and then Quillin.

So, Haymon just locked down the #2 guy, possibly the #1 guy, in the division.

Haymon may have just secured Quillin, but it was a dumb move by Quillin. Dumb move. So many what ifs?!?!

What if the fight with Jacobs ends up in a draw? What if he loses on points, or by knockout? What if he is robbed by the judges? What if he is stopped on cuts or due to some injury? What if the ref or doctor stops the fight too soon?

All of this makes it very difficult to market him to another title shot through Soliman's IBF belt (which is the conceptualized step after Jacobs), GGG or to regain the WBO belt. GGG already said that the main attraction to Quillin was because Quillin had a belt and a unification run is what GGG wants.

Arum, on the other hand, will most likely manoeuvre Koborov to fight a stable stiff to win the WBO title on a very good occurrence.

Top Rank lost control of the promotion to a fresh outfit too and they're a powerful promoter in boxing. They were fine with Jay Z promoting the fight because their guy was set to make a career high pay day. Why the difference with Quillin who was going to make $1.4 million?

There could be two things going on here. Quillin's team figure even at $1.4 million, this was too tough a fight for him to risk his unbeaten record when he had a better shot against Jacobs where he could pick up another belt and defend it against no-hopers. From a long term financial point of view, it might make more sense to dump the belt, beat Jacobs, and then try to position himself for an even bigger fight against GGG. Odd rationale, but plausible.

Alternatively, this was a business decision by Haymon. He doesn't like Jay Z and didn't like the idea of Jay Z promoting a show with one of his fighters. As @Fenster days, this puts the kibosh on Jay Z's foray into boxing. I tend to think this was the reason because he could have lost to Korobov and still fought Jacobs. He might have made a bit less money, but if he beat Jacobs, he would have set himself up for a rematch with Korobov or an unification fight with another champion. Haymon doesn't want to advance Jay Z's foray into boxing and Haymon even if it would help his fighter.

Haymon has Taylor fighting Solimon, which is a farce of a fight. He'll pit Quillin against Jacobs and the winner against Taylor, assuming he beats Solimon, and then claim that the winner is the best middleweight on the planet, even considering GGG.

The odd part about this is that Golden Boy didn't have a problem with Jay Z promoting the show when they won the bid. I don't have the interview at my fingertips, but I clearly recall that both Golden Boy's representative and Top Rank's representative said that they were happy their guy's were getting paid a lot to fight or something to that effect. Well, what this shows me is that clearly Haymon controls the fights his fighters take, whether or not their promoters disagree. Notice also how Oscar and Eric Gomez, GB's matchmaker, haven't said anything about Quillin's decision. They were strong-armed out of the decision by Haymon.
