Could be, but I doubt it. He was definitely a loner, but probably cared about what the public thought of him.
He didn't have much schooling, if I remember correctly, so his standoffish, I don't give a shit attitude was probably a defense against people wanting to chat him up. I'm too big, mean, bad and scary to care what people think of me.
You have to be a real monster to not care what people think of you.
I remember reading that he had little white friend, a neighbor I think, that he would take along once in a while. That doesn't seem like a monster to me and children are a lot less judgmental than adults, a nice fit for Liston.
