Vaca got lucky against Lloyd Honeyghan, and the ragamuffin man got his revenge.

That guy had some bad Karma or something. He loses a point on a clear accidental noggin scrunch opening a cut that stopped the fight. His Ibf was not even on the line since the British commission would not sanction a 15 round title fight. They spoke for the Ibf at the time. Incredible close fight. Then after the fight the Ibf stripped the guy for taking part in a none title fight.

    Scabs.

I think Lloyd is one of the most underrated fighters in British history

    Fight of the day

1987: Charles Williams vs Bobby Czyz

1897: George (Kid) Lavinge KO 12 Joe Walcott, San Francisco.

1907: Abe Attell KO 4 Freddie Weeks, Los Angeles. Retains World Featherweight Title.

1929: Mickey Walker W 10 Ace Hudkins, Los Angeles. Retains World Middleweight Title.
“Fighting in all his old-time form, the champion not only outfought Hudkins in nearly every round but had the Nebraska slugger groggy on several occasions.”
(Burlington Free Press, Oct. 30, 1929)

1931: Tony Canzoneri W 10 Phillie Griffin, Newark, NJ. Retains World Super Lightweight Title.

1937: Henry Armstrong KO 6 Petey Sarron, NYC. Wins World Featherweight Title.

1948: Sandy Saddler KO 4 Willie Pep, NYC. Wins World Featherweight Title. People want to talk about dirty fighters.Saddler was as good a street fighter as he was a boxer and combined the two in the ring.

There second meeting when Pep was stopped by the doctor after 9 is dubbed by many as the dirtiest title fight in history.

One of boxing's best ever rivalries

1960: Cassius Clay W 6 Tunney Hunsaker, Louisville, KY. Clay’s pro debut.

1971: Bob Foster KO 8 Tommy Hicks, Scranton. Retains World Light Heavyweight Title.

Fight of the day. A daily double.

1974: Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman

How that overrated bum, chicken, fight fixer Ali managed to make Foreman into a human pinata is anyone's guess. Some kind of Cinderella man I suppose or maybe George ate a bad cabbage.

1982: Marvin Hagler vs Fulgencio Obelmejias

1906: Abe Attell W 20 Harry Baker, Los Angeles. Retains World Featherweight Title.

1933: Vince Dundee W 15 Lou Brouillard, Boston. Wins New York & NBA Middleweight Title.
Dundee “won by side-stepping most of his (Brouillard’s) savage rushes and driving him back with a light but effective right to the head… Vince relied almost entirely on his superior boxing skills. As he moved east and west to escape the Worcester youth’s furious lunges he ripped a looping right to Lou’s head. This did not bother Brouillard in the slightest but they went for points and when the contest ended he had enough to give him a slight lead in eight rounds. The verdict … was unanimous.”
    (New York Times)

1939: Henry Armstrong KO 4 Bobby Pacho, Denver. Retains World Welterweight Title. Armstrong’s 5th defense in 21-days. And again with this Armstrong guy.

1974: Muhammad Ali KO 8 George Foreman, Kinshasa, Zaire. Regains World Heavyweight Title.

1977: Luis Estaba W 15 Netmoi Vorasingh, Caracas. Retains WBC Junior Flyweight Title.

1982: Marvin Hagler KO 5 Fulgencio Obelmejias, San Remo, Italy. Retains World Middleweight Title.

1986: Joe Manley KO 10 Gary Hinton, Hartford. Wins IBF Super lightweight Title.

1993: Orzoubek Nazarov W 12 Dingnaan Thobela, Johannesburg, SA. Wins WBA Lightweight Title.

1998: Arthur Williams KO 9 Imamu Mayfield, Biloxi, MS. Wins IBF Cruiserweight Title.
-Cesar Bazan W 12 Mauro Lucero, Mexico City. Retains WBC Lightweight Title.

2004: Yutaka Niida W 12 Juan Landaeta, Tokyo, Japan. Retains WBA Strawweight Title.

2008: Anselmo Moreno W 12 Rolly Matsushita, Panama City. Retains WBA Bantamweight Title.

To this day I don't know how Gomez beat Zarate. I've read that Zarate was sick that day and it must be true. But Gomez was dangerous.
I watched the Czyz/Williams fight at a Mexican restaurant. At the next table were Richie and Alberto Sandoval and their father.

A personal favourite there; Czyz was getting a lot of hype, and Williams was meant to be blown away. And he nearly was...

But as well as being a really good fight, it was at a time, where you could stick on ITV in the middle of the night and without no previous advertising you had the whole bill live in the middle of week. It had the historic (first man to win four claims of a world title at different weights) Hearns/Roldan fight as the nominal main event, which was also a fun scrap.

Vaca did get lucky, but Honeyghan from the first Vaca fight onwards had lost that spark. Even in the Vaca rematch he just threw bombs, lacking the cunning and sharpness he had shown against Curry, Bumphus, Hatcher et al.

Honeyghan broke his hand against Hatcher and was never the same fighter again.

I remember it being said at the time that Lloyd was a pot head or started smoking weed a lot.

That may be true as he did like to party. Tyson loved him for that.

Personally I don't think honeyghan was ever the same after the curry fight . For me he changed his way of fighting he became much more aggressive

The Espana/Taylor fight was a tough one for Meldrick. He'd have been better off had he told both Duva and Benton to go away and leave him alone after about the 3rd round. One guy telling him to box, the other telling him to get close and he had no clue how to get close beyond just walking forward.
