He didn't want to get beat up. Barrera didn't fight him until way late in the game. Nobody wanted to fight Marquez in the 90s.
Think you are right, too much risk involved, lose to him and your payday dissolves fast.
given his track record no one can say with a serious face that Morales was scared of Marquez, and honestly it would have been an even fight, it was just one of those fights that never came to be, same as Morales/Hamed, Marquez/Hamed, Trinidad/Quartey, Trinidad/Mosley, and the list never ends, the fight just never got made, it's as simple as that
I thought it was because of his boxing style, not considered a Mexican fighter or crowd pleasing, especially when he lost his wba featherweight bid to Freddie Norwood.
His fight with Pac is when the media took notice of him- by then 2005-2006, most- myself included felt Morales was on the downside of his career.
I am glad it never happened both are great fighters but their best was not at the same time.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
Marquez was never a blind brawler like a good percentage of Mexican fighters and was robbed against Norwood. You could tell during the fight that there was no way there were going to let Marquez win that fight. Especially when Norwood tripped and punched Marquez and they scored it a knock down an when norwoods glove touched canvas, the ref conveniently didn't see it.. Marquez didn't become a full-time boxer till later. At that time believe or not, he was an accountant for a Gov't Agency in Mexico.
They want your @$$ beat because upsets make news. News brings about excitement, excitement brings about ratings. The objective is to bring you up to the tower and tear your @$$ down. And if you don't believe that, you're crazy.
