Why Morales never fought Marquez?

I think JMM has made bad decisions or not taken lower offers for bigger fights. He could have faced Naz, he could have faced Manny for a 5th time but went on to lose against Bradley. Calculated business risk. His life, his career his choice.

First of all, if you folks remember, Marquez wasn't that well-known those days. He became sort of over-night sensation after his first pac fight, the 3 KD thing becoming a legend of sort.. But the big problem with Marquez is that he has trouble with his fellow counterpunchers and more so with those slick, evasive type fighters. Remember down-the-hill Barrera gave him a good fight. Both Barrera and Morales can counter pretty well. I wouldn't go far as saying Marquez would have lost but I can say it would've been a helluva fight! and I wouldn't dare say who'd have won, coz I be biased..

@ElTerribleMorales nailed it. Fights simply don't happen. The same item that contradicts all the nonsense spouted on and on about by Ward and his hypnotized fans also dismisses any notion of "ducking" in relationship to this question. Once again its the calender although a little more subtle then the obvious failures of Wards claims.

Morales started his career at 122 and went on to more or less dominate the division. Marquez was most likely born a featherweight. Morales had the name rep, tv appearances stc and Marquez was desperately trying to break through behind him. They both started fighting in 93 within months of each other but it just couldn't have been done based on the when each man broke stride. Its also very true that the media concentrated on Erik because it had not seen that good a boxer with that good a ko ratio @122 ever. The guy was sporting a 90% or better for a time.

Cant see Norwood having an effect anymore then Junior Jones effected a Mab fight with Erik. And the style thing I don't get because if ever there was a classic matchup of styles it was Morales/Marquez.


If I was going to blame someone if there was a window then it would be the handling team around Marquez. Quite possibly one of the most inept in modern times. I mean look what they did after Norwood. They wasted about 2 years of the mans boxing life. And then came the Chris John episode. That 2002-2005 area looks pretty ripe for a fight but look at all the players involved. Literally musical chairs or rather musical belts. There were about 8 super stars in the same division at the same time. Look how long it took for Mab/Hamed. I used to believe that Hamed skirted around Marquez but @Fenster brought a pretty compelling case to suggest otherwise. I just cant get over how deep that featherweight era was and we got some great fights out of it but missed out on plenty also.

Thank you. The same people that repeat everything the HBO crew say completely ignore them when they confirm, along with Beristain and Marquez himself that they refused the Augie Sanchez date.

Marquez turned down a huge career high payday - $500,000 - to fight a week later for £5000. How can a fighter "duck" a fighter that refuses to fight him. Yes Marquez was a mandatory, when he got the chance he said no. Fact.

& at the time JMM...was not a draw- once again this is a business- so that would answer the topic of this thread-Why Morales never fought JMM--# uno he wasn't a draw, we can debate why...

There is no (if). Marquez turned down the offer to fight Morales for 1.5 million. Same as he turned down a Pacquiao rematch for 750k. As I recall Nacho was telling the media why should they accept the lower amount when Marquez is the champion.

You are correct, I didn't remember exactly when, I speculated that it occurred on the downside of Morales' career.
I was responding from the perspective that Morales didn't evade JMM, nor was Mexico or the media clamoring for it, the way they wanted MAB-Morales, which led to a trilogy: JMM was always on the outside...even with their bad decision making.
