Ode to Bernard Hopkins
Hard to believe that its been over 20 years since the first time I seen this guy fight. It was Hbo and against Roy Jones. I figure I disliked him for about 10 of those years but have grown to respect him for his life's work. Its rare to see this kind of longevity and after all is said and done we that have witnessed it have a lot to be grateful for as fans. He really is a throwback.
Saddened somewhat as a fan of the sport in general that this man is not given his due and is rather slighted at every opportunity because of how he has looked that last couple of years. The mere fact that in this panty waist era that he is willing to unify with this animal says enough on its own but people need to realize that this guy is like many that came before him and is an international treasure to the sport. He's been fighting since many people on this very forum were most likely in diapers.
The man started late and came up the hard way surrounded by all the cornflake box superstars. The middleweight division was being ignored save Roy's brief stay and so was he. Nevertheless he went on to rack up 20 defenses and become the first undisputed champion since Hagler and the last undisputed champion at middle(save Jermaines paper trail).
At age 40 he loses two close fights with Hbo's new poster child and then jumps up two weight divisions and destroys the man who beat the man again defying the odds. But dominating middleweight in his mid 30's already showed that he was an odds buster. And lets not forget that he also actually weighed 160 pounds on many nights of the fight. Making him a natural middleweight. Digging deeper we can go back to where he came from. A thug and convict that even lost his first fight as a pro.
Then in his early 40's he has two ugly fights with Winky and Cal and after those agrees to meet another middleweight destroyer in Pavlik at a catch weight and schools him. The came Pascal , the thrashing of Cloud while closing in on 50 and tonight he goes for yet another milestone.
50 years from now he will most likely get more credit for what he has done then in the present which in all honesty is par for the course with this sport for certain players. Hindsight is truly 20/20 and I'm happy that I was able to witness this guy. Should he win this then imo he starts to creep in to that GOAT conversation regardless of how we feel about him personally. Whoever wins, I hope they really push hard for Stevenson and full unification. I'm a fan of Kovalev and still think he wins but I find myself cheering for the old man.
WAR EXECUTIONER!!!
Kovalev looks a little tight.
They want your @$$ beat because upsets make news. News brings about excitement, excitement brings about ratings. The objective is to bring you up to the tower and tear your @$$ down. And if you don't believe that, you're crazy.

Kovalev looks huge compared to Hopkins.
Has Hopkins landed a telling punch through 2 rounds?
Kovalev needs to stop just thinking about the right hand though.
1st round knock-down was legit, but Hopkins was a little of balance and a bit of a slip![]()
