as a light middle weight he has to keep the fat off, so he isn't going to go crazy on the calories too start off with. what is good about the diet is that it probably maintains his muscle mass and supplys him with usefull energy sources from carbs but (and this is the tricky part... ) he isn't storing a lot of fat but also his diet is looking after his joints... cartilage is mostly fat based...
