Oh hit very regularly. Daily. Injuries are common. Normally broken fingers etc. Sometimes the ball has got through the 'grill' of the helmet and broke noses or cut eyes, but obviously head injuries are rare, and one like this is unprecedented.
In the old days they used to play without helmets. Nutters.

Less so in recent years. But the ball is very hard (much harder than a baseball for instance) and is bowled at 90+ MPH. Broken bones are common but head injuries are fairly rare.
Damn, I had no idea it hit ninety plus. That's big league material. I thought it was thrown underhand, can't see it getting that fast. I need to look more into it, I'm American, I know duck all about crickett

Underarm? Yep and between innings they dance round the maypole. Oh Walrus... You are American for sure.

So what is it sidearm? Or is it thrown like our US baseball.

I guess it could be what we here in the US call submarine which men's the pitchers arm come up during the throw.

It's a shame he died...freak accident really. I'm surprised this hasn't happened in baseball more recently. Bowlers in cricket can "pitch" just about 100 mph which I believe is the fastest recorded bowl in history and they bounce it in which is pretty amazing for the ball to keep that kind of pace to it. Baseball on the other hand you deal with a tad more velocity, Aroldis Chapman a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds holds the World Record for fastest pitch at 106 mph. But worse than that the ball coming off the bat is also very dangerous and pitchers have been getting hit in the face and head more often and the ball coming off the bat is going even faster than what it was thrown at.

Can't Saddo update so these videos can be played on a tablet like kindle fire. I'm not able to see any of them. I've brought this up before and never heard anything. Perhaps it is expensive for the forum to do but a few other forum's I go on can be played on kindle.

That's a damn shame. That's the strange thing about the human brain, it just takes that one hit on the sweet spot and anything can happen. RIP to the poor guy.

Yes this is true @Saddo I have a new Android phone and it no longer shows videos on this forum either when the old Sony android used to fine. Has the site had a recent code update or are the updated operating systems on our devices to blame?

It was a match between NZ and Australia in the 70s I think. Basically it came down to the last ball, and NZ needed to hit a 6 to win. A 6 is scored when the batsman hits the ball over the rope (off the pitch) without it bouncing (think of it like a home run). In order that a 6 would be impossible to hit the Australians rolled the last ball so the batsman had no chance of hitting a 6.
The rules were then changed unsurprisingly!

That was really bad sportsmanship too,he talked it out with his next in command and they rolled it on down. total shit, also put a stain on an otherwise great career.Everyone regretted it after the act the news went world wide made fronts of news papers etc.

Respect to Hughes and family the funeral is today.

Maybe cricket is the most followed sport out here I would have thought it was Aussie rules, maybe not generally speaking. Our whole state stops for a horse race and we dont get this coverage or general public grief when a famous jockey passes.
