Does a long range uppercut unravel like a cross or does the elbow stay locked in position from start to finish?

If the punch started with the elbow in the final position you could not generate power and would be compromising defense horribly.

Hooks are thrown uniformly, regardless of range. The elbow adjusts to direct the punch.
Uppercuts also rely on the angle at the elbow to deliver the fist upward.
You adjust the angle to suit the situation and therefore the elbow does not lock.

I think the longest one you'd ever want to throw if ever, would be if you ducked down and slipped under their led arm to their outside and you threw your trailing arm up in between their arms.You'd be wide open and over committed trying one from distance any other way.
