Great stuff.
The entire story starts off great and ends somewhat sad.
For those who can find/dig the story up- Clay was about 16, Green 18 I think?
Clay talked his way into a sparring session which Green @ the time was preparing for a major amatuer fight.
From what I've read it was a tko-Clay was standing, but the ref called it.
Later Ali would say: Green was stronger than me.
When they met each other again- Green's wife persuaded him to go up to Ali in a restuarant- knowing Ali either wouldn't remember him... or refuse to remember- But later Green stated Ali looked at him and said--There's that N-word! He knocked me out! I want him!
Then hugged him!
They casually talked and at one point before Ali retired- Green asked him to help promote his book- calling himself Ali's Ghost.
The way Ali told it...(and I understand his point) was everybody who gave him troubles as a kid amatuer or in a sparring session was trying to cash in. BUT if he wanted to make some money- fight him as a pro.
Conclusion- Ali lost his next fight to Spinks- So the postponing began- Ali trains hard and beats Spinks. Ali said he wanted to defeat anyone who had beatan him- but when he mentioned it to the powers that be- they accused Ali of digging up the bum himself.
So Ali was compromised: Fight Green to help him get some money &..avenge..or walk away and break his promise.
Everyone from future boxer Quick Tillis to Don King was asked to put the match together-instead the powers that be said they would back a fight with Larry Holmes-no one else
So there ended the rematch of Ali fighting the only one to ever stop him
Kent Green...thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
