Default Cotto/Alvarez appears dead in the water.

By Steve Kim & Rick Reeno

Earlier today, Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya broke the news to BoxingScene.com that a proposed fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Miguel Cotto for May 2nd was no longer on the table.

Todd duBoef, the president of Top Rank - who have a close relationship with the Puerto Rican star - told BoxingScene.com:

''(Oscar) obviously can say that on behalf of 'Canelo' so that's fine. If Canelo and (Oscar), they don't want to move forward with other things then let them move forward with other things."

As of Friday, it was believed that this fight was still being negotiated.

"Cotto and his guys said there was a proposition on the table and they said they'd get back to everybody on Tuesday when they were together. If that's not acceptable, then it's not acceptable," said duBoef.

Gaby Penagaricano, Cotto's legal adviser, told BoxingScene.com:

"I spoke with Oscar last night, he said there was pressure on him from Canelo and they needed to move on. That's fine, we have no problem with that. Oscar spoke to you about deadlines, but this is not about deadlines. This is about two sides reaching a deal. They were moving in the direction we wanted but they didn't get there. We didn't reach a deal. There are no hard feelings," Penagaricano said.

Golden Boy and Alvarez had reached out for other options in the past couple of weeks, namely James Kirkland, as a contingency plan. It's not clear what Cotto does moving forward. Some are speculating that he could fight again on Puerto Rican Day parade weekend in early June in New York, as he has done in the past - and Penagaricano said that scenario was an option.

Perhaps a slim chance in between the lines but I doubt it.

"Duck" my ass. He's showing Ginger he's the one who calls the shots.
    Not the other way around.

This is where free speech goes wrong. Cotto has fought a who's who of the era but it will be said he ducked Canelo. That's just embarrassing to logic. Did Canelo win a round against Floyd?

It won't be said by anybody who knows boxing and is capable of thinking logically.
    Of course, that excludes whats-his-face.

The big disappointment here is that I reckon it means Floyd fights Cotto again, which pisses me off a bit. Not only is Canelo v Cotto a better fight than Floyd v Cotto, but it also fucks up the last chance of a Floyd V Pac fight.

Is it a coincidence that the fight date was may 2 and news media is saying pac/may is set for that date. I would think it's about the negotiations on the purse split and seeing how may 2 is busted, provided pac/may happens, that cotton corner is using the situation as leverage.

So not only does Cotto prevent GGG unifying the middleweight belts but then he goes on and throws a stick into the spokes of negotiations for the biggest fight in boxing right now.

Congratulations Miguel, masterclass in getting the average boxing fan onside

Aren't you making Cotto a little too responsible for the current state of boxing as a whole? I mean.... Cotto might find your words flattering in an amusing sort of way.... but he's not the center of the boxing universe. His focus appears to be on not caving to Ginger's demands, which as I have stated before is a bit ludicrous when you consider that of the Big Four (Floyd-Pac-Cotto-Canelo), Alvarez is the one with the lesser resume by far. The rest of the shenanigans going on around him, well..... everyone else is accountable for their own actions and decisions. Is Cotto now to blame because poor GGG doesn't have anyone to fight?
    C'mon..... get real.

The more childlike tactics Canelo and his team (including DLH) use to try and force Miguel's hand and cave to their demands, the more I'm glad Cotto is digging in and being stubborn. Let Pac and Floyd figure their own shit out, ffs. And if Floyd decides he'd rather face Cotto in a rematch, then so be it. Frankly I'd rather see Floyd finally face Pac, but that's up to the fighters to decide. If I'm Cotto, I'm not turning down an opportunity to rematch Floyd.

Forget them both. If they can not make the fight then whatever fight they do have should not be ppv unless it it better than canelo v cotto.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.

Real shame that, it would have been a great fight. If mayweaher fights Cotto would it be for the WBC 160 belt?

It's pretty obvious Cotto would rather take the L against Mayweather than to take the L and a beating against Alvarez.

If I was cotto I would prefer to fight the p4p king and not Canelo who arguably lost every big fight he's been in.
