I remember Mildenberger got Ali pretty good there at one stage (the so called "prime" Ali).
And I also remember Ali laughingly said the German ultra featherfist "hit harder than Frazier + was the hardest puncher he'd faced" in the early 70's. LOL
"Enough with the games mate! Your messing with the Grand Master!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just 2-Weeks after battling rugged 'Atom' Amos Johnson to a 10-Round Draw in a
tough bruising bout, 27 year-old Karl Mildenberger is back in the Ring.
His opponent is American - Ollie Brown, a 'big' ~ 6' 2" ~ 213 lb. slugger-puncher.
Ollie {Age; 32 years. 9 months} is from Hartford, Connecticut but is now based out
of Miami. Ollie is primarily a cannon-fodder for up-and-coming fighters {ie; opponent status}.
Ollie was the Florida State Heavyweight Champion for 5 1/2 years, from
{March 1959 thru September 1964}. On the down-side, Ollie has lost 6-of-7 over the
past 15-Months.
Ollie also has been a sparring-partner for both former Heavyweight Champions -
Floyd Patterson and Sonny Liston.

~ Karl Mildenberger Topples Mr. Wilson ~
German Heavyweight - Karl Mildenbeger slammed American - Oliver 'Ollie' Wilson around
the Ring for 3-Rounds with 'jarring' left-hands to the head and body.
Mildenberger {196 lbs} kept up the pressure in Round 4, and shook up Wilson {213 lbs.}
several times with straight left-hands to the head.
Just past the {1:45 Mark}, Mildenberger jolted Wilson with a very hard left-hand to the
head, which sent the American 'staggering' to the Ropes 'out-on-his-feet'.
The bout was stopped by the Referee at 1:55 of Round 4.

Karl Mildenberger who is ranked #9 Ring Magazine and #6 WBA, takes on another American
Heavyweight.
Brunio Mueller {Manager} has invited '3' American Fight Promoters to view Karl in this bout,
as Mildenberger will be planning on a fight tour of the United States.
Jefferson Davis is a 'tall-and-lanky' boxer who is based out of Houston. Jefferson is a 'scrappy'
fighter, who despite his lack of power is willing to trade with his opponents.
The American had an excellent amateur career, which included a win over Cassius Clay in the
Light-Heavyweight division.
Jefferson has only been floored 'once' in his 4 1/2 year career, and has never been stopped
in '29-Bouts'. And all '6' of his losses have been Decsions to World-Class opponents.

~ Mildenberger Wins Decision Over American - Davis ~
~ German Scores Win Over Pesky American ~
Karl Mildenberger was given a 'brisk workout' by American - Jefferson Davis. Though Mildenberger
won by a 10-Round Decision, he was forced to work at fast-pace to defeat the pesky Davis.
Mildenbeger {199 lbs.} was the harder puncher throughout, but the 6' 4" Davis {202 lbs.} was able
to land with long lead right-hands on the pressing southpaw to keep the German honest.
Mildenberger and Davis fought to a stale-mate over the first 3-Rounds, as both landed sharp punches
to the head. Mildenberger was leading, but Davis was scoring with good counters.
The German was the effective-aggressor throughout the middle-Rounds {4, 5 and 6} as he landed
with accurate left-hands into Davis' 'rail-thin' body, forcing him to give ground.
But the 'pesky' Davs showed grit, and came back strong in Round 7, by landing pin-point straight
right-hands on Mildenberger, including jarring the German with a solid 'double' right-hand at the
end of Round 7.
Davis was again effective in Round 8, as he was again able to out-hit Mildenberger from long range
with poking left-jabs and right-hand leads to the head.
In an effort to swing the tide, Mildenberger came out more aggressively over the last 2-Rounds, and
scored with heavy right-hooks and straight left-hands into Davis' body, forcing the visitor to back
away and hold. Mildenberger took both Rounds 9 and 10.
The Associated Press scored the bout for Karl Mildenberger {5-2-3} in Rounds.
Fight Purses
* Karl Mildenberger .... $11,000 {U.S. Dollars}

Karl Mildenberger has now moved up to the #6 World-Ranking. Karl will be taking on another American
who was a former fringe-contender.
This will be a 'tune-up bout' for Mildenberger, who will be defending his European Championship in 5-Weeks
{May 14, 1965} against Italian - Piero Tomasoni.
Kirk 'Big Oar' Barrow is a muscular and physically-fit 'boxer' who is now based out of San Francisco. Barrow is the
former Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Champion.
Kirk at one-time was a 'highly-touted' Heavyweight, who was World-Ranked at {#6 in 1960} and at {#7 in 1961}.
But the Amercian sputtered in June 1961 and lost 4-of-5 bouts.
Kirk's career appeared over on August 13, 1963 when he was 'toasted' {L KO 3} by Cleveland Williams.
Kirk came back a year later {July 29, 1964}, but he was stopped {L KO 3} by Willie Ray Richardson. Kirk
has not fight since {8-Months}.
Kirk does have one 'upset win', where he defeated {W Dec 10} Jefferson Davis on May 6, 1963.
Kaley Sonner {Manager} >
"We ran into some trouble ahile back, and Kirk lost focus. But now we're heading back in the right direction.
Kirk has been running 5-Miles each day, and he rows his row-boat on the River for 2-Hours each day. He's
in great shape. You'll see what happens in the later Rounds, when we surprise Mildenberger."
"We took this bout because we know we can win it. A win here, and we are right back in the Heavyweight
picture for 1965."

~ Mildenberger Wins By Kayo ~
~ Euro Champ Ends Bout With One-Blow ~
World-Ranked Karl Mildenberger ended his bout with American - Kirk Barrow with one vicious left-hand
in Round 4.
Mildenberger opened up fast with his southpaw-stance, and delivered a series of left-hands on Kirk Barrow
who took a 'lathering' during the first 2-Rounds.
With the bout 'well-in-hand', the European Champion from Germany easily boxed and toyed with the
plodding American in Round 3, by flicking in right-jabs and right-hooks into Barrow's body.
Each time Barrow moved in, he was met by fast-flurries from Mildenberger, who then spun out of the
way of Barrow's wild-swings.
In Round 4, Mildenberger lowered his hands and baited the American to move in and come forward.
Just before the mid-way point in the session, Barrow 'fell-for-the-trap', and move into Mildenberger's range.
The German then 'unleashed' with a series of sharp left-hooks that put Barrow on 'Queer Street'.
Mildenberger then stepped forward, and delivered a 'jolting' left-hand onto Barrow's exposed head,
dropping him at Center-Ring.
The Referee counted out Kirk Barow at 1:40 of Round 4.

"The Battle of the Southpaws"
Karl Mildenberger > will be making the 1st-Defense of his European Championship that he won over
Italian - Santo Amontii by a {KO 1} on October 17, 1964.
Mildenberger is approaching 'the status' of World Title Challenger, and an impressive win is
needed to move into the Top 5 level.
Piero Tomasoni > is a rough wild-swinging southpaw that they call 'The Hammer of Manerbio',
as he delivered his right-hand like a looping ax-swing, and his left-hands like a sledge-hammer.
The Italian is also rough on the inside, and Piero is not ashamed to dig in low-left hands that he calls his
'Testicle Testers'.
The young Italian has only been a Professional for a little over 4-Years, as he started out in February 1961
as a 17 1/2 year-old Light-Heavyweight.
What Piero lacks in ring-skills, he makes up for with a relentless-attack, and he is surprisigly strong for
only 183 lbs.
Piero had fought for the Italian Light-Heavywiegjt Championship {December 7, 1962} and lost {L Dec 12}
to Piero Del Papa.
He also fought for the Italian Heavywieght Championship {May 24, 1964} and lost that bout as well,
{L Dec 12} to Santo Amonti.
In his only other loss, Piero was stopped on cuts { LTKO 8} to 'highy-touted' Benito Penna on July 20, 1964
a fighter that he had defeated {W Dec 10} earlier back on January 24, 1964
But, Piero has won '3-Straight' since that loss, including scoring a solid win {W Dec 10} over talented German
Wilhelm 'Prinz' Von Homburg in Dortmund, Germany on January 16, 1965.
Piero is currently ranked as the > #3 Italian Heavyweight, and #8 European Heavyweight.

Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
What We Have Here
Is a very ordinary southpaw German Heavyweight out-boxing the so-called 'Greatest'.
Karl did have fast-hands, but had absolutely 'Zero' power in his fists.
And he was backing up Cassius in the majority of each session.
Jack Dempsey >
"Ohhh, would I have loved to get that Clay in the Ring. He is no Gene Tunney, not by a
long shot."
"He drops his hands, and has no real strength."
Round 10 begins around the 36-minute mark. I like how Howard Cosell basically called the knockdown just before it happened, remarking how Mildenberger was vulnerable to the straight right hand, and..... BOOM!!
If this whole thread, riveting as it is, is meant as criticism toward Ali, I don't get it. He went to Germany to face a tough, ranked contender, and knocked him out. The same fighter who later on went the distance with tough, rugged Oscar Bonavena.
~ Round 10 ~
Karl Mildenberger down at {2:51} of Round 10.

~ Some Odd-Ball Sports Reporter's Scoring ~
After 10-Rounds
New York Post 'Sports Reporter' Milton Richman did 'not' score a single Round for
Karl Mildenberger thru 10-Rounds. He had the Champion up 10-0-0 in Rounds,
and 12-0 in Points.
Howard Cosell had it {7-2-1} after 10-Rounds, and had Cassius up 10-3 in Points,
though 'Howie the Shill' did change his Scorecard 'twice' during announcing the bout.
The UPI {United Press International} had it {7-0-3} in Rounds.
'Stars and Stripes' had the Champion ahead {8-0-2} in Rounds.
The AP {Associated Press} had the Champion ahead {9-1-0} in Rounds.

Oh well, at least it was used as a good training session for Ali, he got to build some rounds without any danger to himself was a good move to use it like a sparring session and do round building once he realized there was no real threat.

'Milde'
Was a decent boxer with fairly good hand-speed. Though he was a southpaw, he positioned
himself with a 'squared up stance' and was open for straight right-hand leads.
'Milde' had a flicking quick right-jab, but he had no power at all.
As for size, 'Milde' stood at 6' 1 1/2" and had a 74" Reach, and weighed only 194 lbs.
He was not a big Heavyweight, and was not overly strong or physical.
Defensively, he was below-average, despite having a good bob-and-weave style.
