After investigation, police found out that somebody in the neighborhood had kept a baby alligator as a pet but when it got too big and hard to maintain, he released it into the lake.

Are you sure it was an alligator and not a crocodile?

They're quite easy to tell apart ....... One sees you later, the other sees you in a while.
