~ Dwight Braxton to fight in South Africa ~
February 4, 1980
Dwight Braxton got an offer to go to Durban, South Africa to take on local hero
and 'highly-touted' Theunis Kok.
If I remember correctly, Dwight got a lot of 'flak' for accepting this bout in
South Africa because of apartheid.
Many other Light-Heavyweights turned down this bout {offer} to go there.
Dwight took the bout, because the money {$2000} at the time, was the most that
he had ever seen. It included '2' Round-Trip airline tickets, plus all expenses while
in Durban, South Africa.
At the time, Dwight {Age; 27 years, 1 month} only had '7-Bouts' under his belt
at 5-1-1 with only {1 KO}.
The bout was a 10-Rounder, and Dwight must have looked like a 'safe' American
Light-Heavyweight.
Theunis Kok, {Age; 22 years-old} was a murderous-puncher, and had a record of
8-0-0 with {7 KO's}, and was already ranked at #10 WBA.
He was a 'tall-and-lanky' southpaw at 6' 3", but he could really punch.
Theunis was trained by none other than Angelo Dundee.
