I think many people only talk distance as in the jab establishes the distance foot to foot that people generally engage at throughout the fight, contact range is something else, as you have proven there.

Stepping seems to be the key, stepping long then throwing, then shifting to the front foot to really get that power into it, it must be the key to time those steps, when to step long, when to step shorter.

Alot of fast footed people get away with that but it can be full committal though too. Unless you have fast feet it can get you in trouble against someone who is balanced ready and laying in wait.
I must look closer but have this vision of The Rock using his stature to his advantage by squatting lower going out of reach and then timing them over reaching to him, to shift into a rising jab with full shoulder forward then would move into his own range on their reaction. I could be wrong but thats whats in my head without looking at footage to check.
