    Default BARRIOS OVERWEIGHT!!!!

Barrios update from today's weigh-in: While the fight between now-former WBO Jr. Lightweight Champion Jorge Barrios and undefeated Joan Guzman will go on, only the undefeated Dominican will have a chance to walk away with the belt. Because he could not make the 130-pound limit today, Barrios has now been stripped of his belt. The two camps have completed negotiations, with Barrios having to settle the matter of extra poundage for an undisclosed amount, but Golden Boy Promotions says the fight will go on. Barrios was two pounds over the limit--originally three, although rumors place him as heavy as eight pounds over yesterday.

agreed, something more than fines needs to be done IMO, removing the extra flesh or something............

You know...it's just such a tuff thing this weight issue...specially with these cat's that are aging & their metabolism is dropping off.

These younguns though...fwock em. They can get down...they just aren't motivated enough or something.

Then again...liquor puts the LB's on pretty quickly...maybe we got some closet drinkers in some of our champions...

You gotdam riz-ight!!! It's all about the booze.

Well this sucks. I'd have expected Gusman to come in overweight not Barrios. After all didn't Juan, weigh in like 18 lbs heavier the next day after his official weight last fight?

I wont judge cause we don't know how hard Barrios worked, maybe he cant make weight anymore. Anyway.. I just hope that this fight doesn't scream Gatti vs. Gamache

I don't think the blame can always be put on the fighter, his team should take a lot of responsibility too.

Not making a weight is a baaaaad sign for any boxer. He'd probably come to the fight all drained and washed-out. If that's the case, goodbye Barrios.
Once in awhile, get outside in fresh air, take a deep breath & with a deep sigh, let out all the things that's bottled up inside you & be free, & you'll get a glimpse of nirvana.

being overweight is not a good sign for barrios, it's usually an advantage to the other boxer. If you are saying he is overweight in his fat percentage, than thats usually a good thing for the other boxer. But, if you're saying he has 8 pounds of extra muscle, than the fight should be called off and barrios should be fined big time.

Maybe if they had same day weigh ins like they did up until 15-20 years ago, people would have to compete at their natural weight rather than drying out and having 24 hours or more to pump the water back into their bodies. Just my thoughts....Jody

In an ideal world that would be the answer but it's not an ideal world; fighters would still dry out to gain the strength advantage putting their health at risk in the ring. Weighing fighters and monitoring them at different stages in the weeks before a fight by an independant company would ensure they lose the weight safely and are the correct weight come the public weigh-in could solve the problem. Although, I suppose with scale, cost and manpower not to mention corruption it would be difficult.
