Cotto vs Canelo

Cotto uses his jab and movement to confuse the one dimensional slow Canelo, outboxing him while avoiding his shots, and landing his own body shots on the ginger, people bitching about Cotto's opponents while trying to boost up Canelo who beat up a never was in Angulo (who had already just been beat and quit against Lara), was given a gift against Lara himself, and then beat up another never was who hadn't fought in nearly two years in Kirkland

and yea Canelo was given a decision against Trout (I felt that Trout won a close fight), but their other common opponent is who?! oh right Floyd Mayweather, where Canelo was schooled the entire fight while Cotto gave him one of his toughest fights in the last 5 years

I am a Cotto fan and would support him against Canelo but Floyd fought aggressively against Miguel because he thought he would be able to stop him because Cotto has been in so many wars.

Floyd never took that risk against Canelo because he would have got seriously hurt. So the fights was closer against Cotto but only for that reason.

You could see it as Cotto maximising his return by retaining the middleweight belt and negotiating a better deal against Canelo. Remember Cotto looked finished losing in a row to Floyd and Trout. Cotto has changed trainer to Roach and taken quite significant time out which has helped Cotto ‘heal up’ his old body. Cotto has won 3 times and all relatively easy victories.

The first strong fighter Cotto faces he will more than likely lose. That is probably Canelo, although that is not a certainty. Cotto would then most likely retire even richer and famous.

Being as objective as possible... I see this as a tough, but not impossible fight for Cotto. Canelo has a decided edge in age, natural size, and at this point probably chin, since Cotto has been in some wars and has come out damaged by them. On the other hand, Cotto has an extremely decided edge in boxing skills. Exhibit A: Cotto gave Floyd an extremely competitive fight, whereas Canelo was shut out and embarrassed by Floyd. Both have power... Cotto may have the edge in hand speed.

Of all the factors above, chin will be key. I see Cotto landing some flush, good shots on Canelo. It remains to be seen what effect they'll have. Cotto will need to exhibit good defense to avoid Canelo's big shots. It'll be an entertaining fight to be sure. One thing for sure..... this one won't fall below the hype like the Floyd-Pacquiao fight did.

I will take the ginger i guess late stoppage i just hope the winner has the balls to fight GGG so he can get the fucking lineal title for the love of god should had it a year ago. Anyhow it will be a good fight and Canelo besides Mayweathers has good wins over Trout and Lara and feel is underrated on this board because ofhow he got his record earlier. Also dear god Tito i pretty fucking impressed by that post to be honest with you man more objective then i would be with some of my favorite fighters kudos dude.

LOL... yeah, it's not easy to put on that "objective hat" when a favorite fighter is concerned. I just tried to concentrate on the main factors such as speed, power, age, etc, etc... and try to base my opinion on that. IMO the fight is hard to predict, because it's all going to depend on the fight plan of each individual. There's enough plusses and minuses on each side to make it a fascinating fight.

I like Canelo a lot but I still question his endurance. Kirkland dragged him into a fire fight and Canelo seemed to fade and have to shell up and catch his wind back.

I think Cotto keeps the jab in his face, works the body and wears Canelo out for the later rounds.

Canelo has always been plagued with stamina issues and I think Cotto's consistent attack is going to wear him down.

Floyd didn't have to take any risks, because he was given a paid sparring session instead of a fight, Canelo didn't throw anything, he had every advantage in his favor and still didn't use them, he had youth and size and he simply didn't throw or try to make it a fight, Cotto was able to lead Mayweather to to ropes just as Maidana did in the first fight, Canelo couldn't effectively cut off the ring to save his life

as for the Trout and Lara fights, the Trout fight was closer but I felt he did enough early on to get the W, and IMO Lara controlled the fight into about the 8th so don't see how so many had Canelo winning

If you read the previous posts, you'll see I was disagreeing with Master over the performances of both Cotto and Canelo versus Floyd. At no point was I arguing that this has anything to do with the outcome of a fight against each other. Cotto turned in a B+ performance against Floyd. Canelo put in an F performance against Floyd. Cotto-Canelo is a totally different matter (and subject).

Hadn't seen this particular post of yours, @Master . I disagree with why you feel Floyd fought aggressively against Cotto. IMO, it had everything to do with Cotto. Cotto pushed the issue. He brought the fight to Floyd, and did so effectively. That's the difference between Cotto's aggressiveness and Pacquiao's aggressiveness against Floyd. Whereas Cotto's was effective, Pac's was not. Cotto forced Floyd's hand by using effective aggression.

I also disagree with why you feel Floyd fought that way against Canelo. Canelo posed no boxing challenge to Floyd. So Floyd was free to utilize the tactic he normally uses..... boxing circles around the opponent and pot-shotting him to death. Most of Floyd's opponents have had the capability of hurting Floyd if they catch him flush. So why would Floyd chance it.... not just against Canelo, but against anybody?

To me..... there's no amount of window dressing that will change the comparison between both of those Floyd fights. Cotto gave Floyd a competitive and exciting fight. Floyd said so himself after the fight. Canelo almost bored Floyd to tears. It was humiliating, and as one-sided as a fight can be. Another one of those, where the hype far exceeds the fight itself.

Regardless of the outcome of a future Cotto-Canelo fight, the fact will always remain that against that one particular elite opponent, Cotto put on a much better show and a much more competitive fight than Canelo...... by many light-years.
