    Default Career change

I am 30 years old and I have a great job currently however I am gone for weeks at a time. I am thinking about changing careers and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have some money and limited bills so school is an option and I am not an idiot. I was wondering about a technical school or something similar to that. I know this a broad scope and not very specific so just throw some ideas at me and they will be appreciated.

Cnc machining and wire edm are excellent skills that are needed in many areas. Don't know your aptitude for math. They say People who can write code are in great demand. I am not an expert on any of these but when I saw your post that's what popped into mind.

I'd say driving truck- but that takes people out weeks at a time lol! Businesses need merchandise: truckers get it to em. Plus its hard to get a pink slip in that trade.

Beware on the I.T. tip aka Information & technology.

India to China are pumping out I.T. personnel by the tens of thousands who are versed in coding across platforms- where here in America- a person spends megaloot just to gain one type. You'd be surprised how many Arabs, Indians are in computer technology. They own more than just gas stations!!!

Mainframe: there is anything from Cobol to JCL to midrange SQL per AS/400.
To server(s) Linux, Unix per SQL to JAVA to Visual Basic. Per website the typical HTML.

In other words- coding can be limited to the type of company. mom & pop shops to mid sized companies don't need JCL or Cobol & some major corporations have in-house coding. Shit that is only useful there. Linux/Unix is most places.

    - as a result; many companies have given their I.T. jobs to contractors who in turn hire of projects- as opposed to full time workers. Kelly IT, ManPower etc.

with shit like this: Looking for SQL, Visual Basic for a nine month project.

What that means- is some ass hole person called a project manager did metrics: how many hours did the last programmer work in a week, did they create code- or update existing- then they go to the manager and say- fire 5 out of those 10 programmers and replace them with 3 temporary ones.

Walaa: Kelly IT, Manpower etc are called to fill those spots.
    The stable position in I.T.?
DBA (data base administrator)is decent & solid, but so few are needed per company. Same with Server Administrators- they can make about 100k, but out of a company sized at 1,000, maybe 5-10 positions in this trade.

or those who deal with the security(firewall) aspect of computers aka I.T. are stable positions- again few needed.

I think the most stable jobs in America is 1. owning your own business 2. driving truck 3. selling dope.

What are your interests? What kind of hours do you want? What is your training. Do you want to do a job you are trained for or one that you like? Are they the same job? If you want security then get a trade. Most trades people in this country make as much as lawyers and some as much as doctors.
You are still young enough to most likely work while you get a trade.

If I had kids I'd most likely suggest to them to take a humanities degree with a major in something to do with behaviour. Degrees that were considered wasted time and still are in many cases in favour of IT studies, engineering and the like are going to be big. This species is going to suffer a kind of psychosis/overload at some point with all of this connectivity and dealing with that is going to be a growth industry. Camp unplug will become part of life. Humans are going to be needed in this world of dehumanization in the not to distant future imo.

Age 30 you're on the cusp of still being able to try out for American Idol or America's got talent.
I'm amazed at how many tens of thousands of people of all races try out for it. Lets me know how many folk out there are unemployed. One can't take days off like that & keep a job.

I'd consider Law Enforcement if I were still in my 30's mainly state patrol.

One of the first things you should ask yourself why do you want to change what is a great job (travel and time away?) and do you want to stay in similar field? What other experience and skills do you have that can serve as a springboard to something else and equally beneficial or do you want to clean the slate in change altogether. You're 30, you can do anything you want. Important that you're realizing the want for change now.
