Duran is the ultimate redemption story in boxing. He was considered the toughest, meanest, most macho fighter on the Planet; and after beating Leonard, he proved beyond doubt he was also the best for his time.
Now the rematch was not going well, but it was still relatively close when he quit. But he quit; there could be no redemption.
Duran became the biggest boxing laughing stock, it was one thing to lose to Benetiz, but Laing...
He was brought in to be fodder for Cuevas, but won; but ultimately, so what? A last hurrah, a dead man's bounce...
But then came Moore and Hagler, and a grudging respect was earned, but still...
Further defeats followed, before his name got him a match with Barkley. A fun fight for a few rounds, before the Blade gets the job done; of course if he wins, redemption and a place in the list of the ten fighters who laced up gloves beckons; but come on, that is not happening, Boxing is not that good a story teller...
