Sorry Lyle, and I don't mean to sound dismissive, but the context of the US is very different to the UK. I know I have opinions on the US political situation, and you of course have opinions about the UK situation, but we are two very different beasts.
Our economy simply doesn't have the population to use to be able to keep so much domestic product within its borders, which the United States does. We have to have imports to maintain our current way of life, and once the tariffs from the EU start to kick in, we will be exporting less, plus those that export to us will likely have reciprocal tariffs which will make everything more expensive for everyone in this country.
Look, in my view the atmosphere here over the last 12 months has become increasingly toxic, and while I was never there, my knowledge of history can't help but make a comparison with the swing to the far right in Germany in the early 1930s.
No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
