Default Al Certo dissing Roy Jones in '98

"He doesn't know how to fight, he doesn't know how to stand and he's wide open as the Holland Tunnel."

"I swear to you, Michael Nunn would beat Jones seven days a week, and twice on a Sunday."

    When asked how..
"Nunn isn't as fast as he used to be, and he isn't as fast as Jones is now. But the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, or in boxing's case, a straight punch. Roy Jones can't throw straight punches often, or as well as Nunn. If Nunn emphasises his speed, his right jab and his left hand I see him as a guy who'd beat and maybe school Jones.

"He's (Nunn) sitting down on his punches more these days and isn't entering the ring jaded with any weight worries, he's going to hurt Jones. He's more fluid and flowing than Jones could ever be, with better timing than anything Jones has seen. He's 6ft3, Jones would have to jump to land and when he does Nunn glides his upper body out of range, which should be second nature to him because he's been doing it for 14 years."

Nun would have gotten whupped by RJJ

Funny seeing James Toney that small though....you would think he had an allergic reaction if you saw him today

WWatt is always on about how Benn and Eubank would beat Roy....did they ever fight Nun? Toney, Hopkins? Ottke? Michalzweski? Griffin? Tate?

Why does everything have to turn into hating on Benn and Eubank?? It's all over the internet, American's use Jones Jr to hate on Benn and Eubank. It makes me think they are really insecure or something.

I guess they're just jealous of what we had..

A bitter hater or telling the Truth? I think the latter.

Nunn wasn't even on anybodies radar screens IMO.

Yeah we're just jealous.. You have had far more world champions and p4p great fighters in the UK. Benn and Eubank are far greater fighters who had much better careers than Roy Jones James Toney or Hopkins. You are entitled to your allusions, I guess...

Nationality shouldn't have anything to do with it but when you consider the size of your population compared to ours, is it really any surprised that you have more champions and p4p fighters?

'population for population' I don't really think that the USA is ahead of britain at all.

I do how ever think that DD's fanboyism/obsession needs to stop though.

Jones was almost perfect, he had power, timing, speed, endurance, strength, a perfect understanding of range, brilliant foot work and a confusing style.

All he really lacked in was defence, he could move in and out of trouble very well but when he got stuck in the other fighters range he lacked the fundamentals of defence. His timing and awareness of range, speed and power gave him an excellent offence and left him seldom in a position where he had to defend.

People can go on about names on a record all the want... you could see Jone's quality in the ring against the top fighters that he fought... Hopkins... Toney... etc he might not of fought all the top names but each one he fought he made it look easy with all the ones that he did.

No, it isn't any surprise and your right about the populations, in fact in the 90's the UK probably had proportionately just as many good fighters.. I wasn't meaning to start some nationalistic debate, it just really pisses me off how this kind of stuff is all WWatt ever posts, and how he always has this inuendo that Roy Jones was overrated or ducking some fighters who would have clobbered him.. And to say that Americans were jealous of what the UK had, during a time when WE had Roy Jones, de la hoya, Toney, Tyson, Whittaker.. Well, I think you can see how it would be annoying.

More insecurity and jealousy that we had something special, and you didn't.

This thread has nothing to do with Benn or Eubank, you'd only bring them up if you were insecure.

Jones was never in Nunn's class.

So you had something special, and we didn't... Pernel Whittaker, Roy Jones, they aren't special to you? But Benn( ) or Eubank, are?? THat's funny man, I mean really, quality stuff. And please, everything you ever post has something to do with Benn or Eubank, or hating on Roy Jones, it's really quite sad, not to mention comical that you would then say I'm insecure when you spend so much time trying to bring down an American fighter.

And what did Nunn ever do that put him in a class above Roy Jones? Let alone around 98, you admit he wasn't on anybody's radar screen.. Well, thats because he wasn't fighting anybody of consequence and was into drugs.. So think whatever you like I guess, it's not as if you'll ever change your opinion on the matter. It's really pathetic that you can go on about the same thing so often, as if you even wan't to have an intelligent debate on the matter.
