Before his life started to fall apart, I really liked him as a boxer and as a person; he was humble, working hard and delivered beautiful and exciting performances. Then, it all unraveled... Did he retire too soon? Hard to answer, but I think that it could have been more damageable to him to keep fighting while beating his body so bad with alcohol.

I think had the Ward fight taken place he would have been schooled badly again. I could see him as a gatekeeper after that.

Pavlik was the great American White Hope for awhile.
He was a terrific fighter with punching power, always a favorite with the fans... he was gutsy... he was humble and personable outside the ring, sort of the "anti-Floyd"... and he fought whoever they put in front of him, records and zeroes be damned. Hell... I was a big fan. And let's face it, American boxing fans were hungry for just someone like that.
But alas, his personal problems caught up with him... and there went his career.
